About the CauseAbout GO–Golden Opportunity
As a completely independent and unique tutoring organization in Ithaca, NY, GO is funded only by community donations, small corporate sponsorships, and local grants–not tax dollars! Currently, GO tutors students in 10 schools in the Ithaca City School District. This fundraising effort is aimed at ensuring that our program can continue and expand. Our organization is a tutoring dynamo, providing one-on-one tutoring to 70 low income students in grades 2-8. The student selections are based on teacher referrals. GO is staffed by a team of dedicated, retired teachers who are paid a small hourly stipend and who typically remain with the same students 3-4 years, becoming important mentors to those children. GO has broad support from teachers, parents and the local school system.

- Match students with expert tutors, not volunteers, student tutors or college students
- Help students catch up to their grade level peers as quickly as possible
- Establish long-term caring relationships with students
- Create a strong support system and learning network for tutors
The Impact of Students Falling Behind
When a middle or upper income child falls behind in school, families often hire a private tutor. But when a low income student falls behind, that option is often impossible. What happens to that child? When a second grade reader falls behind, the gap between that child and the rest of the class grows wide very quickly. Reading comprehension is necessary for understanding instructions, research and math word problems. Learning becomes more difficult; and by third grade, the gap becomes the great divide. By middle school the student is hopelessly behind and becomes discouraged. For many, by high school, there seems to be little reason to stay in school. Although classroom teachers do an excellent job, and remedial help is available, much more is needed. GO does this heavy lifting by helping students catch up to their peers and achieve at grade level. Your contribution will allow GO to add desperately needed tutors to schools with long waiting lists and to provide continuing help for under-served students.
